There’s no better way to celebrate your little one’s first birthday bash than with a cake smash!
A cake smash is the latest trend wherein you allow your little one the freedom to get as dirty as they wish to with the cake while you click some aesthetic pictures to mark their one-year milestone.
With the right props, angles, and colours, these pictures can turn out to be ones you shall treasure forever as a keepsake from the event.
At Artin Photography, we’ve got a glowing reputation for capturing exhilarating moments so that you can cherish them forever.
We provide cake smash photography in Vancouver and Port Coquitlam, BC.
If you’re feeling creative and would like to DIY a cake smash photoshoot, we’re letting you in on a few of our secrets.
#1 – A Clean Colour Palette
Who doesn’t love color! But when you’re planning a photoshoot, you need to ensure cohesion and cleanliness of colours.
Whether you opt for warm colours or cool ones is totally your choice; however, you should know the theoretical difference.
Warm colours include tones of red, yellow, and orange and are the first to reach the eyes. The cooler tones include hues of green, purple, and blue, which convey a subtler and calmer look.
Choose a colour that vibes with you, and then stick with it. If you wish to create a combination, two colours are the maximum you can go incorporate.
Meanwhile, one neutral tone such as white, black, grey, or beige will remain the non-dominant background tone to let the other colors shine.
#2 –Selecting Props and Outfits
A visit to your local crafts store is sure to tempt you into buying a huge variety of props.
However, bear in mind that the best cake smash photography outcomes are achieved with minimal but adequate props.
The props help to add balance to the photographs, but you must not let them take over. To put a number to it, three to four props should be enough.
Always stick to the colour theme and add accents of gold or silver for added definition, if you wish.
As for outfits, a baby in a diaper only looks the cleanest for photoshoots. It also makes less of a mess to clear later. However, if you do wish to dress your little one up, keep it minimal and monochromatic. A loud dress might take away from the moment.
#3 – Tell A story
The key to photos that take you back to the moment is encapsulating the story of the moment.
With wider angles, you can focus on small details such as the messy hands once the smashing starts. Don’t miss out on facial expressions and feelings of excitement when they first start getting their hands dirty.
Control the entire frame so that you’re getting shots of exactly what you want to capture.
Bear in mind that cake smash photoshoots are some of the toughest we get to do at our studios. Don’t let the stress get to you. Allow room for flexibility and get shots before the cake is gone.
Hiring a professional can be a huge relief in this regard, and you’re sure to get the perfect shots. We also offer newborn photography, maternity photography, and photography for kids in Vancouver and Port Coquitlam, BC.
