The affection and unconditional adoration fathers have toward their little ones is written all over their faces, so it’s easy to capture it.

However, the child part can be tricky because kids don’t care for a photoshoot that takes them away from their usual activities. Getting them to pose is half the reason you go for professional family photography instead of doing it yourself.

Following are some dad-child poses you might want to go for.

1.    Shadow Time-Lapse

Time-lapse pictures are as old—if not more so—as Facebook. Some fathers document their daughter’s growth by taking a picture every month or year until the present day; pregnant couples share their journey; some even capture their rescue pet’s recovery or weight loss journey.

We suggest the same, but with shadows. That way, you or your child won’t have to pose and you will be able to depict the passage of time in a subtle yet poignant manner.

2.    Safe Harbor

Comparing sizes is not new to newborn photography. We try to bring out the protective role of a parent by focusing on how large their presence is. Literally.

Examples include tiny hands and large fingers, a large hand big enough to cradle a small head, or both arms cradling one baby each. These important bits are foregrounded, whereas the rest is faded out with lighter color composition.

3.    Quality Time

With candid images showing a father and daughter, son, or both having the time of their lives, you have to discuss the concept beforehand. This is because your family photographer runs as little interference as possible to catch you at your most effortlessly affectionate.

You can be baking cookies, having a one-on-one conversation, or teaching them to ride a bicycle. The photographer’s job would be to immortalize these beautiful moments and give an accurate visual representation of what they are witnessing at that moment.

4.    Smile into the Camera

Let’s talk poses because what’s the point of kid photographers otherwise? Yes, most children are uncomfortable with getting their photos taken. Therefore, the window to get them is as short as the flash on their camera.

You could put your arms around them like a back hug, put them on your shoulders, tickle them, and even carry them in your arms—anything that would get them to laugh works.

The photographer’s job would be to keep an eye out for the perfect moment when they look into the camera with that huge grin on that face and catch it before it disappears.

5.    Silhouettes

We started with shadows, so it seems fitting to end with silhouettes. Using a narrow aperture, our photographer will make sure minimum light gets through, and your figures remain dark.

Then, instead of slowing down the shutter speed to get well-defined images, they will actually increase it to capture nuance.

You could be jumping up in the air while holding hands, throwing your kid in the air, carrying them on your shoulders, or anything else that translates well to silhouettes.
