A family portrait is cherished for years to come, and that’s exactly why it should be perfect. Much preparation goes into getting a family picture taken, from outfits to location, but the pose is often neglected.

Lack of preparation on how you plan to stand in front of the camera can sometimes lead to pictures that make you look awkward or disoriented. To remedy this, here are three posing ideas that will make your next photography session stand out.

1. Stroll Poses

Stroll poses are pictures taken with family members walking. This can lead to some very natural images and allow you to loosen up, giving you more space to be yourself.

A picture of you with your family walking hand-in-hand through a field can lead to an exceptional click, one that deserves to be on your fridge door for years to come.

2. Seated Poses

It’s not easy taking a picture of a family seated in a way more interesting than just positioning them side by side.

The key here is to think of shapes. The family should be close to each other, with the parents hugging their child and the outlines of their bodies forming a different shape altogether. For example, a mother holding her two daughters close to making the shape of a triangle.

You may have never thought of this aspect of capturing photos, but focusing on shapes and lines can create very visually strong images that capture a feeling like no other.

3. Interact

It’s not enough to just stand in front of the camera during a photoshoot and especially not for a family photoshoot. Family photos must have a sense of playfulness and closeness that showcase a true family bond.

This may not be achieved if you’re just planning on smiling in front of a camera. Rather, try and look at each other, smile, or crack jokes that would get a natural reaction from other members. These elements help add emotion to the portrait and allow the picture to depict the love you have for each other.
