There’s a new photography trend in the industry; have you heard about it yet? It’s called cake smash photography. Even though it started several years ago, it’s one of those trends that never fizzle out and disappear. This trend is quite famous, especially in households with babies and toddlers. Your teeny tiny tot is turning one. How awesome is that? It feels like just yesterday they came into this world kicking up a storm. It’s astonishing how quickly they have grown up in just a year.
It’s your baby’s first milestone, and there’s no better way to celebrate it than with a baby cake smash photoshoot. All babies love to smash cakes and make a mess.
What is Cake Smash?
A cake smash is a photography session where the cake is specially made for the babies on their first birthday. They get to smash, eat, put it everywhere, especially on themselves, play with it, or play on it. It’s a time when mommy and daddy can’t say no. This type of photoshoot typically has a cute theme, and the results are different each time as each baby is a unique little human being.
When Should a Cake Smash Take Place?
We at Artin Photography recommend that you do the cake smash session within a month of your kid turning one or a month before they turn one. Anytime later is not recommended as babies grow and change in a blink of an eye. We don’t recommend that you do the baby’s cake smash photoshoot on their birthday. These two events together will be hectic, and the baby is bound to get cranky.
What Should You Bring to a Cake Smash Photoshoot?
You don’t need to bring anything except yourselves and the baby. Talk to our photography team at Artin Photography if you have a particular theme in mind, and we can discuss the props to be used for the cake smash. Our studio in Coquitlam, BC, has various props and backdrops for you to choose from. However, if you wish to add a personal touch to the cake smash, you can bring your own props and incorporate them into the session.
Who Should Come to the Baby’s Cake Smash Photoshoot?

Please don‘t bring everyone you know to the photoshoot. Just bring your immediate family members for the cake smash photography session. We want to focus on you and your family and not deal with the riff-raff of the crowds, nor do you want the baby to get tried while taking photographs with everyone. Suppose you want to include your extended family in the photoshoot. In that case, we recommend you do that in a separate session for family photographs.
At Artin Photography, our photographers want to do your baby’s first cake smash photoshoot here in Vancouver. Contact us today to discuss how you want the cake smash session to turn out and your requirements. Let us make this day memorable for you.
