It is open to visitors 365 days a year and features spectacular seasonal displays, world-class horticulture, weddings, concerts and events. The history
The garden has been around since 1913 and features over 100 acres of flowers, trees, and shrub.
Butchart Gardens is a large garden located in Victoria, British Columbia. It is best known for its flowers and attractive displays of plants that are showcased throughout the year. The Butchart Gardens began in 1904, when Jennie Butchart moved to Victoria with her family from England. Butchart had inherited some funds from her father’s estate, but decided to invest in a plot of land, instead of spending it on herself. Butchart purchased a plot located along a creek near the ocean and planned out a garden. She used her inherited money to create Butchart Gardens by planting flowers, shrubs and trees from many different varieties.

How to get there
The gardens are located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. That means you need to take a sailing trip to access the island first. This could be done through on of two major ferry transits in British Columbia (Tsawwassen or Horseshoe bay). When you get to the island, the gardens can be accessed easily by car or bus. Butchart Gardens has plenty of parking available and there are numerous options to get there, including public transit buses that run from downtown Victoria.
But if you’re planning on driving to Butchart Gardens they have ample parking. But if you wish to go by bus, there are three major options for Butchart Gardens public transit stops: Butchart Gardens West Park & Ride (Butchart Gardens West Park & Ride is located at Butchart Gardens, which makes it one of the easiest public transit stops to use). Butchart Gardens West Park & Ride also has spaces for buses and cars, so it is a great way to get both there and back.

The four gardens

Butchart Gardens features four distinct garden styles to explore including the horticulture collection, formal rose garden, English cottage garden and tranquil Japanese garden.
The formal rose garden at Butchart Gardens was started by Jennie Butchart over 100 years ago. The Butchart family set out to create a garden filled with different types of roses and for Butchart Gardens: “Today it features more than 20,000 bushes in over 5,000 varieties.” Butchart Gardens is known for its unique collection of glowing pink Butchart Beauty climbing roses. If you find yourself planning a trip to Butchart Gardens in 2021, be aware that Butchart Beauty roses are being replaced by Butchart Gardens’ new rose called Butchart Star.
Japanese garden, my favorite spot to meditate
The tranquil Japanese garden at Butchart Gardens also features five different gardens including the moon viewing garden, waterfall garden, rock and rill garden, iris pond and more. The Butchart Gardens has also placed 15 monuments around its property that honor the Butchart family.

Eating at Butchart Garden
Butchart Gardens also features a restaurant that locals and tourists rave about. The Dining Room at Butchart Gardens serves Canadian food including soup, salad, pastas and more. Butchart Garden’s website says of their cuisine, “Butchart Gardens’ is Canadian Culinary, offering local flavors with an international accent.” Butchart Gardens is open daily all year round from 9am-7pm.
