Setting your kid up for a smashing 1st birthday with a cake smash photography session is not talked about much in family circles.

It’s criminally underrated because parents don’t want to risk ruining their child’s 1st birthday photoshoot. What if it’s not as good as the run-of-the-mill? Will I be paying for the cake and buying it, too?

Today, we’ll be answering these and many other questions related to baby smash cakes.

Will I Be Paying for The Cake and Buying it, Too?

The simple answer is yes. Here at Artin, cakes do not qualify as props, so they are not included in the package. This is because parents are often picky about their baby’s first cake, at least the one going up in the photos.

However, we recommend asking us for advice or just going through our cake smash section where we have suggested buying a cake that’s light, bright, and sparkly.

A chocolate cake might not translate well, but we can make it work, too. You call the shots on the cake, and we take them. It’s that simple.

Why Cake Smash?

Cake smash photoshoots are fun; they make both the parent and baby photographer laugh, which affects the baby’s mood. This activity is largely candid and requires no tweaks from our side. In fact, the less interference, the better. You will be done in no time, and the pictures will come out so great, you will have a hard time taking your pick.

What Happens During Planning?

Cake smashes, like any other photoshoot, require quite a bit of planning. During these consultations, we discuss:

  • Location
  • Theme
  • Props
  • Clothes
  • Colors

You can have an outdoor session or an indoor one in our studio. The latter will be unaffected by inclement weather. As for the theme and props, that’s your prerogative.

However, going minimalist is best as it’s safer for your kid, and you don’t want to take attention away from the main event. Clothes and colors also go hand in hand because they have to match the cake and theme. Again, we suggest something light and bright, but you have the final say.

When to Schedule the Shoot?

Shoots are generally planned a month before your baby’s 1st birthday. You should always book a slot outside their nap time and when they are most active because that will determine the mess.

Note: the messier, the better.

Also, you should never feed them in advance, or a poke is the best we’ll get out of them.

Who Can Join in the Fun?

As a kid photographer, I’m probably the last person to begrudge your other children for their fun. Of course, they can take part in the cake smash. Set them free and let them be kids; you will have one less thing to worry about at no extra cost.

However, keep in mind that we do charge for adult participation.

How Do I Get My Baby in the Mood?

That’s easy. Babies are attracted to mess like a moth to a flame. They will gravitate towards it themselves. Since these are candid photo sessions, you are advised not to run interference as that may ruin their mood, and the cake smashing might quickly turn into an eardrum smashing of the adult variety.
